The Better Business Bureau Online provides the latest consumer warnings, information and assistance on filing BBB reports, and dispute resolution. In addition, the site offers a resource library and the frequently asked questions provides helpful tips on consumer fraud and scams. Regional BBB's are linked and complaints can be filed online.
Consumer World is a pointer source that has over 1700 useful consumer resources on the Internet. The site includes hundreds of consumer agencies and information sources organized by product and location. The range of links is quite impressive and it includes reviews of products, links to state government consumer affairs departments, consumer rights booklets, and news of the latest consumer frauds.
National Fraud Information Center (NFIC), established in 1992 by the National Consumers League, is the oldest nonprofit consumer organization in the United States. Their mission is to fight telemarketing fraud and scams. The site includes current news about telemarketing fraud, an Internet Fraud Watch, telemarketing suggestions and tips, and a special section for elder fraud information. Victims of fraud can make a report from the NFIC website.
The Internet Advocacy Center has information for the consumer. The website provides links to other consumer advocacy sites, reports of pending consumer legislation, and useful information about company policies.
WebWatchDog is a site that monitors the web's legitimate and not so legitimate companies that are migrating to the Internet. The site provides a searchable database where consumers can search by category or a specific business to learn as much as they can about the company/business. When a complaint is filed and found to be true, the company is then put in the Doghouse.

Business.com is a source of free detailed information on 10,000 US public companies, 14,000 international companies and over 44,000 privately-held companies. For public companies, the site offers access to corporate profiles, financials, news, officer information, and key developments. Much of the information on the site is provided by OneSource and Market Guide. Additionally, the site is browsable by industry and segment, with links to further resources available for each segment.
CompaniesOnline is co-sponsored by Dun and Bradstreet and the Lycos Search Engine. The directory offers free information on over 60,000 companies. You can search by company name, city, state, industry, and ticker symbol. The service provides a brief description of basic information (industrial classification, ownership structure, and if an online address is available). Free registration allows one to find additional company information such as information on annual sales, employee size, company trade name(s), immediate parent, ultimate parent, contact name, contact title, email and location type.
CorporateInformation.com is a huge pointer source for corporate information on public, private, foreign and domestic companies. The site is organized by country and most of the information is free of charge. The site also provides links to market research reports, accounting policies, laws, and court decisions.
GTE Superpages is an amalgamation of Yellow Pages from all over the country. The service contains the current business listings for over 5,000 Yellow Page directories throughout the United States. A broad search can be done that identifies all of the businesses of a type in a specific location or you can perform a more targeted search by typing in the name, location, address, and phone number. It also provides a Consumer Guide Interactive service that features product information, ratings, reviews, and recommendations for over 100 consumer product categories.
Hoovers Business Resources has free and fee-based information. The directory profiles major US companies, international corporations, and emerging growth-oriented companies. There are two levels of access: the company capsule is free; the more in-depth company profile is subscription-based. In addition to company information, the site provides current news updates from ABC News and a link to IPO Central.
Lookup USA is a free directory of company information that is offered by American Business Information (ABI). The service is based on two databases: American Directory Assistance and American Yellow Pages. The two databases together serve as the entire white and yellow pages for the entire United States. Searchers can use keyword searches to identify people from American Directory Assistance and businesses from the American Yellow Pages. The searches are free but additional services can be purchased, such as mailing lists, credit ratings, and how-to marketing books.
Switchboard is one of the largest directories of company and individual information that is on the Internet. The site is free and easy to use. One can look for information on companies by searching by name, location, or business category. One can also search for specific products and services based on their proximity to your current location.
The Thomas Register is the place to look for information on the products and services of American and Canadian manufacturers. The database contains more than 150,000 manufacturers and the site is free to search. Selected manufacturers' catalogs are also available and ordering products is available via the Thomas Register site. The site is constantly changing but it is one of the most useful sites on the web that provide information about companies and the products they offer.
The Web100 tracks the largest American and international companies on the web (ranked by revenue and based on the Fortune 500 and Global 500). The list includes direct links to each company website and it is arranged in alphabetical order. Also included are selected articles on who is on the list and how they are doing. They have also broken down the Web100 by industry, a useful way to track the success and failures of the world's largest companies.
